Another Trip North

We recently returned from another week at Matt’s parents cottage. We really are quite fortunate to have their cottage as an escape. Sure it can be quite the drive – for instance for this past trip it took 3.5 hours there… 5 hours back… but when you get there and can sit back on the dock, put your feet up and look around it is definitely worth it.  Some highlights include boat rides, atv rides, raspberry picking, a number of yummy meals, and a day over at our property clearing.

Here is a photo recap of our trip

Tuesday Tidbits

I’ve decided I like Tuesday Tidbits over the name of Tuesday Thoughts…

  • I just was a solo mom for the last 3 days – and Alex and I had a great time! He was such a good boy – no real tears, lots of laughs and cuddles. Oh how I love this boy…
  • Alex is a real sweetie. On Friday it had been 15 years since my dad passed away in a drowning accident in Lake Huron. For a number of reasons I didn’t get to the cemetery until Sunday night. I told Alex that this was his other “Papa”. He replied “My Papa?” then he walked through the flowers and gave the tombstone a hug… melt. my. heart!
  • Did you know that there is only 69 days to Halloween? 86 days until Breaking Dawn Part 1? And 123 days till Christmas?  All 3 are on my mind.
  • There are also only 38 days until my craft show! We have pretty much all the tables booked I’m happy to say! Only about 1.5 left… Yeah! Also I’ve been crafting to get my booth ready. I have a dozen carnation brooches made, a dozen poppy brooches, 2 dozen bookmarks… and I’m working on a calendar and some really cool felt Christmas decorations. I’m having a hard time deciding what to make – I want to make everything!
  • We just spent a  week up at the cottage… so relaxing. While there we cleared quite a large area.  It was nice to see the property taking shape… even just a little bit.
  • On Friday night we got to get all dressed up and go out on the town! Our friends rented a limo… yes… a beautiful stretch limo (you can see pics on my Facebook if we connect there), and went down to Toronto for dinner. It was one of the most relaxing drives I have ever had on the 401 (may or may not have had anything to do with the glass of wine in my hand). We had dinner at a restaurant called Barberians, a historic steak house in downtown TO.  The food was amazing… and the bill in the end was a small fortune, but hey – we had a great time!
  • Fall is in the air around here. I’ve seen leaves changing colour and there is Halloween stuff in all the stores. I must admit, I’m really looking forward a change of seasons.

Books on Alex’s Nightstand

I don’t always share the books that Alex has been enjoying and thought I should try to get in more of a routine with that.  Today I returned a PILE of books to the library and pulled out three that he seemed to especially enjoy.

Papa is a Pirate by Katharina Grossmann-HenseI won’t say that this was  a book that either Matt or I enjoyed, we frankly thought it was rather silly – but in a cute way. Alex really enjoyed it though – and that’s all that matters.  If your little one enjoys Pirates, then they will like this book.

Pooch on the Loose by Steven KrollPooch on the Loose by Steven KrollThis book was a lot of fun. It’s about a little dog who is bored of his routine life in NYC and decides to take a run for it one day and explore the city at Christmas time. He checks out all the major attractions, and eventually he feels lonlely and hungry and decides to go home. It really made me want to go back to Manhattan… Alex loved the puppy and his adventures and as you know he LOVES Christmas!

Mooses Come Walking by Arlo Guthrie

Mooses Come Walking by Arlo Guthrie

This sort book was a hoot! It’s a poem written by Guthrie and while it may not necessarily be 100% age appropriate, Alex enjoyed it (and so did I).

Books I Love

I’ve added a new page to the blog called “Books I Love” You will find it on the right side.  It lists a lot of the books I have read in recent years that I felt were at least 4 or 5 stars out of 5.  Some are chick lit, some romance, some mystery, a few horror, some Canadiana… a real mixture. The one thing I get complaints about at work is that I don’t include a lot of male authors in my Krista’s Favourite Book displays – I’m trying to add more male authors to my list, but hey – I like girly books!  I hope you can use the list (which I will update regularly) to find a new title or two to enjoy.

Tuesday Thoughts

I saw Tuesday Thoughts somewhere and thought I’d steal it this week to share some random thoughts about what’s going on in my life.

  • I’m a sucker for long books – especially those in a series. I’m in the midst of reading both “Fiery Cross” Diana Gabaldon and “The Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest” by Steig Larrson – both are heavy enough to do some serious damage if they were dropped on my toe.
  • Speaking of books, I’m going to add a Books I Love page to the blog.
  • Last night was a gong show in our bedroom. Went to go to bed and Mason had been sick… all over my side of the bed and on the floor. Not fun.  Then after stripping the bed I got the brilliant idea that we should flip the mattress. In doing so, we accidently smashed the glass on Matt’s bedside lamp.  Not cool.  This sort of thing always happens to us.
  • I think I have a bit of an addictive personality since Pinterest has me hook, line and sinker.  The good thing is that I know I’m not alone after following many of you.  If you are not following me, you can find me here.
  • I’m also newly addicted to True Blood. I’m working my way through the series. Currently on episode 5, season 1.
  • I’m quite excited about my Handmade Culture Show and Sale I’m putting on at the Library. The only thing is is that I’m scared we won’t get enough vendors! We have 8 confirmed, with a max of about 18… so almost half there. It’s October 1st, so we still have time, but it’s less than 2 months away.  Must start crafting as well!
  • I have great plans to start walking more. I need to exercise – my waist is turning from twinkie
  • Today I finished listening to “Breaking Dawn” by Stephenie Meyer in audiobook format… for the second time (see -sucker for huge books) and it is quite timely – 100 days until Breaking Dawn part 1 hits theatres! I CAN NOT WAIT – yes, I am a Twilight fan.  If you haven’t watched the trailer yet I highly suggest it. I really really hope Meyer decides to finish Book 5 – Midnight Sun

Our Little Flock

Yesterday we were lucky to go visit a rare miniature pet farm that was having an open house. There were rare sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, donkeys, llamas – and lots of tractors.  We went with one of Alex’s best friends – Henry. Henry lives down the street from us so we luckily get to have lots of playdates. Alex and Henry ran from pen to pen, and Alex ran from tractor to tractor… sadly Henry wasn’t too keen of the tractors. Unfortunately I was trying to be cool and use my camera at a more advanced stage than I should, and the depth of focus was off more than I would have liked, but a few pics did turn out.

I know Alex doesn’t actually look happy – but he was! He was just awed by all that was going on around him!

3 years, 3 months

That’s how old Alex is today. Wow. A proper update is long overdue – don’t feel like you need to fully read this, it’s really for my records 🙂

The Specs
Height – 38.5″ Weight 34lbs
I’ve heard that when you turn 3, you are about half of your adult height – if that works out to be accurate, Alex is going to be over 6ft tall!  He is feeling heavier and heavier all the time – or my arms are getting weaker and weaker

Speech
Well, we are getting there. Alex tries to say a lot – but it just isn’t very clear. We are working on getting him to finish words – that is his problem. He will say “bo” rather than boat or “nigh time” rather than night-time. It’s coming… but just slowly. The good thing is that he is finally repeating like a little parrot – but the bad thing is that he is repeating like a little parrot. Even those 4 letter words… as I learned the hard way…

Potty Training
I think we did it! We were relatively laid back about the whole potty training thing. We actively promoted the use of the toilet by just not putting Alex in his pull-up when he was home. At the sitters, he wanted to be like all the other boys, so he would always use the toilet like them, often coming home with the same pull-up we sent him in.  Now he is wearing undies all day long and accidents are very few and far between (although we did have an unfortunate incident yesterday afternoon while Alex was sitting on my lap… sigh). Alex is generally dry all night long – but we do take him for a sleepy pee before we go to bed so I think that helps.  On the way home from Cleveland on Sunday we risked it and Alex wore his undies the whole drive (took us 10 hours due to a trip to the outlet malls…) and no problems!! The only real issue we now have is that Alex tends to hold his poo for a few days at a time making it quite painful when the time comes…  we are working on that one.  Matt’s parents just got back from a trip to England and while there they picked up some Thomas the Train undies form Marks & Spencer’s. They are just adorable… but they are more of a panty form rather than a brief, so his little cheeks hang out sometimes – too funny!

This and That
We’ve noticed recently that Alex is in a bit of a new stage. He’s still a lot of fun. Very smart, imaginative and energetic… sometimes crazy energetic! He often is literally running circles around me – think of Elf in the circular doors in the movie Elf.   He has an amazing memory.  He is also funny – playing jokes on us all the time.  And he’s actually playing with Mason! Finally!
Alex had his first dentist apt. over a month ago (did I mention that before?) – he did very well.
Alex has changed his eating habits and often doesn’t want to eat which drives me nuts (I know – it’s a phase), and he isn’t the most well-behaved child recently when we go out to dinner… working on that one.
A few nights a week Alex still gets up at least once, but thankfully he has that double bed which allows us to go to him and allows everyone to get a decent night sleep. And the last 3 nights he has slept into 8:30!! Woot woot!
