Family Photos

For the past two weeks I’ve been stressing about family photos.  What to wear, how to pose, how will Alex act… you know what I mean.  We were luckily enough to have been given a gift certificate as shower gift from our “Library Family” at a really good local photography studio – Thanks Everyone At SPL!!

After rescheduling 3 times, we finally went yesterday afternoon at 4:30.  Alex had been up for about an hour so I knew he wouldn’t be too cranky and he was great… for about the first five minutes.   He was doing the solo poses on some props brought out by the photographer (who by the way was amazing – making so many noises and gestures to TRY to make Alex smile – but our little man gets very serious around a camera) – and while on an antique tricycle… he fell off – and split his lip!  Luckily he was ok after a few minutes and no blood made onto his nice white tee.  So we did some family shots, some nudie shots, some of Alex in his hanbok, and then some in his Montreal Canadiens jersey.  By the end, there was nothing that would make him smile – treats, toys, singing – nothing.   By this point is was 5:30 and we still had to review the shots – and 5:30 is Alex’s dinner time… uh oh.

The photographer parred down over 200 shots to just under a 100, and then I went through the 100 and got it down to 10.  Out of the 10, we ordered photos of 4 different poses.   By the time we left it was 6:30 and Alex had eatten everything we had and thrown everything he could get his hands on… not good.

Unfortunately this studio does not put them online to share with family or friends so I won’t have any copies for another few weeks.   I will have to scan them in order to share with you all – so watch for the pictures to come!

Now onto finish planning and organizing Alex’s 1ST BIRTHDAY PARTY on this Saturday!! Oh boy… what I have we gotten ourselves into?!

Fun!

Ok, I’m a little slow – I’ve been busy so things may be a tad delayed…

Yesterday we went on a fun playdate with my friend Steph and her son Harrison.  We went to Waterloo to a crazy place called KidZone.  KidZone is an indoor play area for children -full of slides, ball pits, tunnels, tubes, ropes etc – and for $4.99, what fun!  Alex didn’t know quite what to make of the area – I think he will get much more out of it once he decides to walk (speaking of which – 3-4 steps… when he feels like it – I think I’m pressuring him way too much).  So here are a few pics of our fun outing!!

Alex loved the ball pit - but sadly no really good pictures of him in there.

Survived… but barely

So today was the full complete solo day for Alex and I.  He let me sleep in until 7:10am – yeah!  It was going to be a gorgeous day, very warm and a chance of showers in the late afternoon, so we had a full day planned.

First we went to the market – I had a sweet tooth as I previously mentioned, so I got a HUGE cinnamon bun (which I just ate for desert… yumm!) and some Pina Colada muffins.  Then Alex and I went to one of my favourite summer eateries… Erie Drive In – for a hotdog and french fries.  Turns out Alex is just like his mommy – a sucker for great french fries!  We then played on the back deck in the sun – gosh I’ve waited for this!  Just being outside really can revigorate you can’t it?  We were supposed to go for a nice walk with Sarah & Alex’s girlfriend Gracyn, but Gracyn was napping longer than expected so we called the date off – oh well… next time!

Then it was nap time for Alex, and I was able to get a few things done around the house – but alas he only slept just over an hour (usually he sleeps for 2 hours in the afternoon) – This might be the beginning of a change in his napping habits since this is the second day where he has woken early.  And sadly this was the start of the day going down hill.

First Alex woke very miserable – the 8th tooth is FINALLY deciding to pop through… I think – I’ve been thinking that for a while, but this time I am pretty sure it is happening.  Then the power went out (4pm), then a massive storm hit – rain, hail, wind, thunder, lightning, you name it – we got it.  So out came the candles, because even though it was only 4:30, it was VERY dark out – solar lights were even coming on!  Since we live in a semi, the lack of windows on 1 wall didn’t help our situation.  By 5pm there was still no power, so I had to get creative.  We were planning on having leftover “Tuna Rainbow Fish Dish” (fancy tuna casserole), so I decided to heat it up on the bbq for Alex.  In case you are in a similar situation, I really don’t recommend it…  Then we had a situation with pieces of apple…  so that was the last straw – we needed to get out of the house.  Since it was still raining a bit, a walk was out of the question.  Luckily I discovered my mom had power on the other side of town, so off we went.  At mom’s Alex had a bath, cereal, and played around a bit.  I called Matt’s mom at 7 and found out that the power back home had just returned, so it was safe for us to get back home.

But I was hungry.  So we stopped at Subway on our way home.  Inside there were 3 people ahead of me – not bad – but they were getting a combined 10+ subs – so 15 minutes later we left – and it was starting to storm again!  Alex didn’t know what was going on – he was in his pjs, a sweatshirt, and no rain gear between us … bad mommy!  Then when we pulled into the driveway – it was a torrential downpour… so we ran into the garage and only got kinda soaked.

But now things are good – Alex is tucked into bed, I have had my sub, and cinnamon bun, and a much needed glass of wine.  Let’s hope something is good on tv tonight – I”m having trouble getting into the book I’m reading for my book club – Luck by Joan Barfoot.  Tomorrow will be better – Matt should be home by 2pm.

Timbits

I have had a couple of questions about what actually a timbit is, so here it is.  Timbits are bite sized donuts produced by Tim Hortons Coffee – the huge Canadian coffee chain.  They are sometimes referred to elsewhere as donut holes – so you might have them where you are too.  There are all sorts of flavours, powered with jelly, chocolate, old fashioned, honey dip…

Ok… I might have to go buy a box today – I don’ t know why, but I have had a MAJOR sugar craving lately – and a MAJOR salt craving… Actually I’m just craving snacks of all sorts right now… Guess I won’t be wearing a bathing suit this summer after all.   And don’t worry – Alex was not being given his own ball of sugar – he was just getting small bits of the timbits… 😉

When Matt’s Away…

Matt has gone away for the annual ice out fishing trip.  He has gone with my brother, his brothers, his dad, and some friends, up to Algonquin Park to fish for Lake Trout since the season just opened this morning… yeah…  So that means, until Sunday afternoon, it is just me and Alex.  Yeah – mommie and baby time!  I must admit I was a little nervous – but really – what’s a few days?!  I’m Alex’s MOTHER!  Who needs to shower?

So far we have…  Gone to the bank, gone to the library, gone for a walk, and had supper – not bad for 3 hours!  Tomorrow we have plans for a walk with my friend Sarah and her little girl  – so long the rain holds off.  It has gone from 5C yesterday to 26C tomorrow… no wonder I have a headache.

I also wanted to share a couple of cute pictuers… and I know we all love to look at pictures!

Much Better

Alex is feeling MUCH better!  Thank you all for your tips – they were very useful… especially turning UP his humidifier… duhh.  He still has a bit of a runny nose and the occasional cough – but for the last 2 nights he has only woke up once and just for a diaper change.  No real coughing fits or crys.  So that means I can sleep and get well!  Yeah!

We did postpone the photos yet again until next week.  Sadly they will not be done by his 1st birthday (only 10 days away!! OMG!), but we will get them shortly after.  I am starting to plan for decorations, treat bags, and food – and the all important Tol Ceremony – his hanbok is laid out to be pressed!!  It is huge, but we will make it work.   It is going to be a bbq on Saturday from 4-8, with some family, and a couple of neighbours.  I’d love for all of our friends to come, especially since we were invited to all of their kid’s 1st birthdays, but we would have to plan 2 parties, and that is just too much.  Also on the 3rd, my grandma is turning 80 and we have another party to go to!

Tips?

Does anyone have any tips on how to help deal with the common cold in a baby?  aLEX has a mild fever, runny nose, breathing more through his mouth, is quite fussy, and has a cough – not all the time mind you, but it is there.  Alex is getting Infant Motrin every 8 hours, he is drinking a lot of water, he has a humidifier on while he sleeps.  I try to use the nasal drops and the nasal suction bulb thing – but he HATES it.  He hasn’t lost his appetite at all which is good.  It is the cough though that I am unsure of how to deal with.  It isn’t croopy sounding – just a cough, but you can tell there is some flem that is sticking in his throat.  If I have the same cold as he does, he has a sore throat too.  Our doctor is on holidays this week, otherwise I would go see him.   So if you have a tip or 2 on dealing with a cough and sore throat in a 11 month old… PLEASE SHARE! 🙂  I hate seeing him like this….

Sick

After almost 2 months of being cold free – Alex and I have been beaten up by a nasty bug.  It started Friday night, Alex was up about 5 times, then Saturday came the runny nose and cough, and major FUSSINESS.  He wouldn’t nap, so I took him for a long walk in the Ergo, 5 minutes in he was out for count.  Luckily it was nice and warm out so I could stroll around the neighbourhood for a good long while.  But then once again on Saturday night, he was up quite a few times.  Sunday, same thing – but the runny nose wasn’t quite as bad.  Again, no afternoon nap – and it was too windy to try to walk, I think he went down for about an hour max.  But the big thing happened later that day – he took one full step on his own!  Not to me or Matt, but to Matt’s mom, but she had some timbits, so it was understandable 😉  Last night was just as bad – except, I now had the cold too.  Sore throat, runny nose, head ache – I really hope Alex didn’t have the sore throat – I’m not sure if Motrin will help that.  Today I had to cancel our first family photo session because I really didn’t think it would be fair to Alex (or me!).  We have it rescheduled for Thursday afternoon – I really hope things will be better for us all by then.

But today Alex took 3 STEPS TO ME!!  Yeah!!

So now he has been napping for 90 minutes so far, I’ve been trying to sleep, but that wasn’t working, so here I am.   And here is a picture of us Friday night… before the sickness began…

First Hair Cut

Today Alex went for his first hair cut!  We were not too sure how he would be… you see he woke up about 5 times last night, crying and crying, so he (we) didn’t get much sleep… I know I had only about 3 hours… yes I’m tired.  And to boot, he woke up with a nasty cold – coughing, runny nose, and VERY fussy.  But he was a very good boy for Wendy our hair dresser.  He sat on my lap and watched everyone around him, eating the occasional treat.  He looks like a totally different boy!
